Crofton Silver Band has continued its amazing string of success by bringing home the prizes from “Britain’s most prestigious” brass band entertainment contest.
Just two weeks after scooping the divisional title in Banding’s national championships, Crofton took first place in the Third Section at the hotly contested Bolsover competition, beating off bands from all over the North and Midlands. Their principal cornet, Andrew Clutton, was named best soloist in the process.
Band sergeant, Nigel Brookes, said: “We pride ourselves in giving our audiences a good show when we are in concert and mix a good proportion of lively, upbeat music, swing and even jazz-funk in with the more traditional brass band fayre.
“Our MD, Dean Jones, decided that we should reflect this and take our selection for the contest straight from our normal concert programme and it worked a treat, giving us victory by two points of last year’s winners, Matlock.”
Crofton’s opened with the Lionel Ritchie’s “All Night Long”, then featured Andrew Clutton in “Concert Piece for Cornet”, followed that with the deeply emotional “Guardian of my Soul” and finished with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band standard “MacArthur Park”.
The band is not taking it easy in the wake of all this contesting. It is spending the entire weekend making a CD, which is to be release in time for Christmas. It is to be called “Champions”.
